Description
The film industry and its relationship with the environment. One title in particular – the Italian title of an old film – brought us to the theme of environmental awareness: “2022: i sopravvissuti” (“Soylent Green”, Richard Fleischer, 1973). Year 2022, an unbearable heat wave plagues New York City, natural resources are running out and its forty million inhabitants are forced to eat a highly-processed food, “Soylent Green”, made from unmentionable substances. Global warming, climate change, GM products… Here we are, in 2022, and Harry Harrison’s novel, which inspired Fleischer, no longer seems like science fiction. However, the film industry has a duty of care and must address the environmental issue: this entails turning the spotlight on the many films, both old and recent (from the Lumière brothers to Don’t Look Up), that have dealt with the subject; but it also means discussing how the film industry affects the environment. This is because film sets also contribute to pollution, but thankfully there is a growing awareness and many production companies are implementing increasingly virtuous plastic-free protocols.
