Luciano Salce would have turned one hundred years old on September 25th. On the occasion of the anniversary, a number of initiatives will be held to honour one of the most diverse individuals in twentieth-century Italian culture, capable of performing in all show genres with enormous talent veiled behind irony. These initiatives will focus on the exhibition of Luciano Salce, Irony is a serious thing – Edizione Centenario, curated by Emanuele Salce and Andrea Pergolari, and organised from the 6th to the 27th of October by the Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia, by the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia and by Sycamore T Company, with the patronage of Roma Capitale, the Accademia d’Arte Drammatica, the support of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, Rai Teche and Istituto Luce/Cinecittà.

Among the colonnades, the garden, and the nymphaeum of the Museo Etrusco of Villa Giulia, the exhibition will take shape with its combination of letters, articles, the private diary of the years of the Accademia d’Arte Drammatica, the archive materials of the Institute Luce/Cinecittà, films from Rai Teche, and, above all, the documents from the Archivio Salce, kept in the Luigi Chiarini Library at the Centro Sperimentale, in addition lots of pictures from the Archivio Fotografico of the Cineteca Nazionale.

Alongside the exhibition, a series of meetings will be held together with screenings in the Sala della Fortuna of the Museo Etrusco of Villa Giulia: a study conference (5–6 October), the very first in Italy dedicated to Salce,moderated by Mario Sesti and about every aspect of Salce’s multifaceted artistic production, with interventions by Valerio Caprara, Franco Cordelli, Steve Della Casa, Laura Delli Colli, Rocco Moccagatta, Guido Vitiello, and Christian Uva, among others; a specific in-depth analysis(11 October), moderated by Andrea Pergolari, on Salce’s participation in one of the most successful genres of the 1960s, episodic comedy, whose origins, themes, and characters will be analysed; an evening dedicated to Brazil (25 October) with the screening, in the original version with Italian subtitles, of the two films shot by Salce at the beginning of his career in the South American country, Uma pulga na balança and Floradas na serra,; and a final meeting (27 October), moderated by Marco Giusti, with an extraordinary reunion of Salce’s actresses: Enrica Bonaccorti, Barbara Bouchet, Maria Grazia Buccella, Orchidea De Santis, Gabriella Giorgelli, Eleonora Giorgi, Anna Mazzamauro.

The event will premiere, September 28th, at 7.00 pm at the Casa del Cinema in Rome, in presence of the exhibition curators’, the Curator of the Cineteca Nazionale Alberto Anile and Diletta D’Andrea, Fabrizio Capucci, Gianni Garko, Andrea Pergolari, and Emanuele Salce.

Moving forward will be screened the restored version of Crazy Desire (1962), presented at the last Mostra del Cinema of Venezia; the film was restored by CSC-Cineteca Nazionale in collaboration with Compass Film Srl, which made available the scene negatives and the soundtrack.

All to show a protean and self-ironic career as a tool to govern the difficulty of existence: over four decades of life without ever losing sight of his passion for writing, dramaturgy, and fiction, Salce lived with the biting reluctance of a man outside the box. His persona brought together the Second World War, the German concentration camps, the Accademia d’Arte Drammatica and Cinecittà, radio and television, Vittorio Gassman and Luigi Squarzina, Franca Valeri and the Gobbi, Ugo Tognazzi and Antonello Falqui, Mina and Monica Vitti, Paolo Villaggio and Fantozzi, and more.
