Description
Despite his remarkable career, nowadays not many remember Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia, the most versatile craftsman of Italian cinema of yesteryear. He was one of the pioneers of the exuberant Futurist movement and, with his brother Anton Giulio, he founded the Teatro Sperimentale degli Indipendenti and the Casa d’Arte Bragaglia. He started experimenting with cinema in 1932 with O la borsa o la vita, starring Sergio and Rosetta Tofano, which was one of the most innovative motion pictures of the early sound film era, replete with nods to the avant-garde movements. Over the course of his career, in his 60-plus films – which include all genres, from comedy and slapstick, musicarello and adventure, to melodrama and peplum – he directed an astonishing number of timeless stars, such as: Vittorio De Sica, Anna Magnani, Totò, the De Filippo brothers, Ruggero Ruggeri, Armando Falconi, Alberto Rabagliati, Gino Bechi, Massimo Girotti, Ugo Tognazzi, Silvana Pampanini, Giovanna Ralli, Aldo Fabrizi and Domenico Modugno.
