Film director Paolo Virzì gave a masterclass for the students of CSC – Scuola Nazionale di Cinema about writing for film. His lecture spanned from Italian cinema of the post-war period, delving into the prolific production of the Age & Scarpelli duo, to the current situation, characterized by the presence of digital platforms.

Virzì talked with the students along with Franco Bernini, artistic director of the course in Screenwriting. As a CSC alum, Virzì has a specific understanding of the National Film School’s mood and is fully aware of the desires, doubts, perspectives, and expectations of his young interlocutors.

The session was less a lecture than an exchange of experiences, suggestions, prompts, goals, ideas, and projects within a shared context. All this could happen thanks to Virzì’s extensive experience in an Italian cinema capable of renewing itself from its own roots.

Fun fact: Virzì did not graduate in film directing but obtained a degree in Screenwriting from CSC in 1987.
