Description

In this year 2024, Sophia Loren is celebrating an important birthday. The Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia and Edizioni Sabinae are marking it with an entirely dedicated issue of “Bianco e nero,” the CSC’s long-running film magazine. After wrapping 2023 with the issue on Anna Magnani, we symbolically come full circle by honoring the other great Italian diva who was won an Academy Award and achieved worldwide fame. But whereas the issue on Anna Magnani was above all about exploring Magnani’s “persona” and its present-day relevance, the one on Sophia Loren is a critical analysis of her work as an actress, through a series of papers that examine her artistic journey from photo comics to Hollywood, delve into some of her most crucial professional relationships (such as those with Vittorio De Sica, Marcello Mastroianni and Emilio Schuberth) and focus on some of the films that defined her career – from La ciociara to Ieri, oggi, domani, from Un marito per Cinzia to Il diavolo in calzoncini rosa and the blockbusters directed by Anthony Mann, from Pane amore e… to Una giornata particolare – but not overlooking lesser-known titles such as Africa sotto i mari, La pupa del gangster and the wonderful Il segno di Venere. The issue is curated by Piera Detassis, features pictures from prestigious collections dedicated to great photographers such as Angelo Frontoni and Rodrigo Pais, and includes an interview with Maurizio Ponzi (who directed Sophia in Qualcosa di biondo) and valuable unpublished accounts by Natalia Aspesi, Patrizia Carrano, Paola Cortellesi and Mario Martone.
