Description
The publication of the new edition of Sotto le stelle del ’44, edited by the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, falls on the 100th anniversary of Steno’s birth and well-nigh the 33rd anniversary of his death. After his departure, the work of this craftsman of humour was unanimously re-evaluated by critics, also on a cultural basis. This diary is a prime example of a clear vision of what was happening in our country on the eve of a new era ̶ that of freedom and of the end of the fascist dictatorship. Steno already saw its weak points, intercepted likely ideological shortcuts and wrote, with disenchanted humour, a comedy script predicting the coming years. After all, the strength of a true humourist consists in conceiving, five minutes before everybody else, the ridiculous lurking just around the corner.
