On 19, 20 and 21 June 2024, the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia will open its doors to artists, filmmakers, and writers from places affected by war for three days of encounters, masterclasses, and screenings, as well as a photographic exhibition, a vivid snapshot of the historical moment we are living through. All citizens, especially workers in the film industry, are invited to register to participate by sending an e-mail to the following address: invito@fondazionecsc.it. The event will be held at the historic CSC headquarters in 1520 Via Tuscolana, in Rome.
Diaspora degli artisti in guerra is the name of the cultural and educational event, which is financed by PNNR funds, and positions the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia as a participant in and the driving force behind a discussion aimed at much-desired change, paying specific attention to training and creativity. The event includes a call for tenders for training, open to everyone over the age of 18 with a maximum number of participants of 400 students (please note that the deadline reported in the call for tenders has been extended to 16 June, at 12:00 pm), which proposes that the enrollees, assisted by the CSC teachers, film the encounters and the spontaneous synergies that will arise between the artists and the participants with a view to producing a testimonial film.
When presenting the programme, Edoardo Albinati and Sergio Castellitto spoke for more than an hour on the importance of cinema as testimony, on the use of vision as a tool to give shape to pain and to the world, and on contemporary wars, which are often civil wars where the persecutor can be one’s neighbour.
Edoardo Albinati: I found the programme very interesting, and I was rivetted by the statements of filmmakers from all over the world: from Ukraine to Congo, from Chad to Syria.
The President of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia Sergio Castellitto: The word Diaspora means ‘dispersion’ and ‘scattering’, which is often suffered by all those who find themselves in countries at war: but in reality, all true artists, at least once in their lifetime, have felt abandoned and isolated even in their own country. The word Diaspora has Greek origins, it means dispersion. Disseminating a people, eradicating an individual, a soul. Moving away from one’s land, from one’s ancestral blood. Many people have suffered outrages like this. There is always a laceration. So, we asked ourselves where those filmmakers, artists, and writers were, they who had been divided and replanted elsewhere. We decided to offer them a place, this place, the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, which for three days becomes a shared home where they can gather what has been dispersed of their ideas, their projects, and their frustrations. Recomposing the diaspora of the artists. We offer a screen to project their works on, and a microphone so they can talk about them. Between two fronts, there is always a no man’s land, a deserted strip, inhabited by fear but also by desire. We want to occupy this land, so that it becomes a place of human meditation, in the same open field where art consistently meets dreams.
