Artistic Directors: Daniela Bassani and Adriano Di Lorenzo
Assistant: Bernard Bursill-Hall
The three-year course foresees an in-depth study of all the elements that contribute to the creation of sound in a film: dialogues, ambient sounds, noises, effects, and music – the pieces of information and expression that are indispensable for cinematic storytelling.
During the first year, there is a common educational goal: mental and cognitive recognition of the peculiarity of the sound that accompanies an image as well as in-depth study of the basic disciplines, such as physics of sound, acoustics, psychoacoustics, electronics, and audio/video technologies. Interaction with the other educational sectors will be pursued constantly to get the students accustomed to mastering their role in a film crew. An interdisciplinary film shooting workshop along with the students of Directing, Acting, Cinematography, and Editing will be held on a weekly basis. Another goal of the course is the making of documentaries and shorts together with students of other disciplines. Courses in Film History and Analysis of film language are active throughout the three years.
During the second year, students will be guided to delve into the theory of the relationship of sound and image, devoting particular attention to the dramaturgy of sound and music historiography. The other courses deal with digital technique: from the creation to the recording and processing of sound. The students participate in several collective exercises, taking part in each stage of the production process, from live recording to sound post-production in the recording room, in order to acquire technical and practical skills as well as a thorough aesthetic awareness.
During the third year, after testing their level of learning, the students are to choose the professional sector they aspire to specialize in: Sound take, for production sound mixers, i.e., those in charge of live recording on set; Sound editing, which includes the construction of the film sound departing from the composition of the dialogues’ individual tracks, special effects, room noise, ambient sound, and music; Mixage, where the right balance among the various sound elements is found, recording the film’s final soundtrack. The graduation films are prepared and made together with the students of other courses.
The last period is meant to facilitate students’ access to the job market, proposing internships at production companies and external laboratories based on the chosen course of studies. Moreover, the curriculum foresees a series of lectures, meetings, and seminars with teachers and professionals in the sector, with special attention to the expressive power of sound in a film image.
At the end of the three-year period and upon achievement of the end-of-course goals, the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema awards the historic Degree of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, which is equivalent to the three-year Bachelor’s Degree (L03 DAMS) pursuant to Ministerial Decree no. 378 of April 24th, 2019.
The faculty of recent years include Sergio Bassetti, Bernard Bursill-Hall, Dario Calvari, Stefano Campus, Gianluca Simone Corelli, Costamagna, Giovanni Costantini, Mauro Eusepi, Sandro Ivessich Host, Silvia Orengo, Renato Pezzella, Federico Savina, Paolo Segat, Marco Stefani, and Stefano Valletta.
Daniela Bassani (Milan, 1966) is an Italian sound editor and sound designer. She graduated from the Rome Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Editing, but soon became particularly sensitive to and developed a keen interest in the relationship between sound and image. For this reason, from 1997 – during the years marked by the revolutionary transition from analogue to digital techniques – she has worked almost exclusively on sound postproduction. She collaborated on over 150 between films, TV series, documentaries, and audio-visual projects with some of the most outstanding Italian filmmakers, including Matteo Garrone, Gabriele Salvatores, Paolo Virzì, Alice Rohrwacher, Silvio Soldini, and Leonardo Di Costanzo. Nominated several times for the David di Donatello awards (for Matteo Garrone’s Pinocchio and Paolo Virzì’s Like Crazy) and the Golden Reel Award (Virzì’s Human Capital), in 2014 she was the recipient of the AITS Award for Leonardo Guerra Seràglioli’s Last summer. She has devoted herself to teaching for years, designing and teaching courses for the Rome Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, the Bolzano Zelig School of Documentary, and the Rome Gian Maria Volonté School. The particular focus of her teaching is the theme of listening as a conscious and synesthetic act. In 2018, Bassani was the first Italian woman sound editor to be appointed member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Jury.
Di Lorenzo graduated as sound engineer from the Istituto di Stato per la Cinematografia e la Televisione R. Rossellini. He began to work as boom operator and utility sound recordist in several international productions, such as The English Patient, winner of the Academy Award for Best Sound, The Talented Mr. Ripley, U-571, Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, Cold Mountain, and Ocean’s 12 as well as in Italian movies like Nanni Moretti’s The Caiman, winner of the David di Donatello award for Best Sound, and Roberta Torre’s Angela, garnering the Ciak d’Oro. In 2010, he began to work as sound mixer. In 2011, he was production sound mixer for the medium-length feature The Wholly Family directed by Terry Gilliam, and then in other international productions including M. Hoffman’s Gore, N. Bergman’s Here We Are, and the TV series The Name of the Rose and The Swarm. As a sound mixer he participated in Marco Bellocchio’s The Traitor and Susanna Nicchiarelli’s Miss Marx, for which he was nominated at the David di Donatello and Nastri d’argento awards. In 2018, he was the recipient of the David di Donatello award for Nico, 1988, directed by Susanna Nicchiarelli. In 2020, he was invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a Jury member. He worked among others with Spike Lee, A. Minghella, S. Soderbergh, L. Hallström, Riccardo Milani, Alessandro Aronadio, Eleonora Danco, Andrea Segre, and Giorgia Farina. He is president of the Associazione Italiana Tecnici Suono since 2012.
