CSC Summer School - Cinematography

The Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, within the Progetto Cinecittà, PNRR: Missione 1 – Digitalizzazione, innovazione, competitività, cultura e turismo | M1C3 – Turismo e cultura 4.0 |M1C3 – Industria culturale e creativa 4.0 | Investimento 3.2: Sviluppo industria cinematografica (Progetto Cinecittà) funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, opens a call to identify, select and train young students who will contribute to support the evolution of the cultural and creative industry operators, strengthening the professional skills and competences in the audiovisual sector related especially to promote the technological transition.

 

  • The Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Scuola Nazionale di Cinema, issues a call for admission for n. 10 Places for the CSC Summer School – Cinematography.
  • The Course will have an overall duration of n. 3 weeks, divided in lectures, and practical laboratory activities, will take place in the CSC venue located in Roma, via Tuscolana 1524.
  • The Course will take place from 07th to 25th of July 2025 indicatively from 10:00 to 16:00.
  • Attendance to the course compulsory.
  • Attendance to the course is free of charges.
  • At the end of the course, students who have successfully attended the planned program will receive a certificate of attendance with clear indication of the skills acquired.

Course objectives

The objective of the course is to acquire the skills and working methods in lighting technology and cinematography.

 

Didactic program

The course retraces the process of the cinematographer’s intervention in a film, from the reading of the script to the projection room. Through the viewing and analysis of some masterpieces of Italian cinema, during the first week students will be introduced to the processes that lead to the photographic choice of a film, and the different aspects on which this choice of background reverberates: lighting schemes, the film’s grammar, the composition of the crew. One morning will be dedicated to a visit to Cinecittà, followed by the meeting with a great master of Italian cinema.
Parallel to the theoretical study, practical exercises in lighting technology, use of optics, camera movements will be developed, up to the final exercise, during which the students will be called to collaborate with the students of the CSC Summer School – Directing for the realization of ten dialogue scenes.

 

Outcoming occupational profile

Competence in cinematography and lighting management.

 

Requirements for admission

1) The applicant must be in possession, on the date of signature of the application, of a secondary school diploma of second degree or other equivalent qualification (if foreign translated under the applicable law) which, regardless of nationality, access to university studies.

2) Over 18 years of age.

3) Proficiency in English language.

 

Application and documentation for admission to the selection process

The application must be sent to the following e-mail address csclab@fondazionecsc.it  with mail subject CSC Summer School – Cinematography by the deadline of May 23rd 2025 time 23:59.

Each application must be accompanied by (otherwise the applicant will be excluded):

1) ID Card or Passport

2) Fiscal code

3) Date and place of birth

4) Address of residence

5) A brief curriculum vitae

6) 1 showreel of works in wich the applicant has worked as cinematographer, with a maximum duration of 4 minutes, in one of the following formats: “avi”, “mpg” o “mov”, in one single file of maximum 500 Mb. The file must be sent through a non password-protected link.

All candidates who have attached the required materials and, based on what is stated in the application, are in compliance with the requirements of the Call will be admitted.

All communications from the CSC will be sent to the e-mail address indicated by each individual candidate. The CSC assumes no responsibility for any inconvenience due to incorrect or missing communications.

 

Evaluation of submited materials

Following the examination of the qualifications required by the call, the selection of candidates to be admitted to the CSC Summer School – Cinematography will be carried out by a dedicated Commission through the evaluation of the documentation and material submitted in support of the application. The list of candidates admitted to CSC Summer School – Cinematography will be published on the official website Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia at the following link: www.fondazionecsc.it.

The course may not be activated if at least 8 candidates have not been considered eligible.

 

Commission and evaluation criteria

The Commission is appointed by the Director of the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema.

The members are chosen on the basis of proven artistic and/or educational skills, respecting the principle of gender balance and in order to promote equal opportunities. The Director of the Scuola Nazionale decides on the selection procedures for admission to the course. The judgement of the Commissions in the selection phases is final. No reasons are given for non-admission.

 

Reference to general aims and principles

This call for proposals follows the following principles:

  • DNSH “do no significant harm”, therefore it is expected that the types of activities planned should not have negative impacts on the environment;
  • Climate and Digital Tagging, the planned activities should therefore place particular emphasis on the aspect of the natural world and the digital world;
  • Gender equality, the activities must be accessible to everyone;
  • development of young people, so that training becomes an instrument for developing personal skills and abilities with a view to promoting integration, especially among young people, in working world;
  • reduction of territorial disparities, so that activities must constitute an inclusive and aggregating factor of the regional reality;
  • absence of double financing according to art. 9 of Regulation (EU) 2021/241, that there is no duplication of funding of the same costs by the facility and other Union programmes, nor regular resources from the state budget;
  • as well as the general principles provided for in the applicable national and Community legislation applicable to PNRR.

 

The Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, either directly or through other companies and/ or partners, in order to enhance and disseminate all institutional activities of the Progetto Cinecittà, di cui alla Missione del PNRR: Missione 1 – Digitalizzazione, innovazione, competitività, cultura e turismo | M1C3 – Turismo e cultura 4.0 |M1C3 – Industria culturale e creativa 4.0 | Investimento 3.2: Sviluppo industria cinematografica (Progetto Cinecittà) funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, owns and has full availability and exploitation rights of all products made with the participation of students.
