Description
The Cineteca Nazionale, the national film archive, an integral part of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, celebrates its 70th anniversary. It was created “de facto” as a result of art. 33 of Law no. 958 of 1949, which requires Italian film producers to deliver a copy of any new film to the Cineteca Nazionale. On the one hand, the archive’s main task is the storage and protection of our cinematographic and audio-visual heritage; however, its most universally known activity ̶ also owing to both major and niche international and national festivals all over the world ̶ is film preservation, i.e. the restoration of film stock from its own archive that need to be given a new life. Albeit expensive (sometimes very much so), this is an invaluable endeavour which literally aims to save films that would otherwise be lost due to physical decay, carelessness and the march of time.
